WHY THIS WORKSHOP?

The relationships between nations are driven by the persona of international leaders, nation’s negotiation history, and future foreign policy objectives. Moreover, several internal and external factors affect the decision making process in Statecraft and Global Governance.

With this perspective, the workshop aims to explore contemporary major challenges of the society. What are the roles of various forums in the development of a country? What is the role of various agreements in defining India's Growth Strategy? What are the various grand narratives for the nation-states? Various such questions will be key concepts, schools of thought, and instruments in foreign policy with the foundation of the civilisational strategic thinking frameworks.

Amb.(retd.) Venkatesh Varma

Topic: "Russia-Ukraine Conflict: Indian perspective and International Impact"

Amb. D.B.Venkatesh Varma Ji was a Member of the Indian Foreign Service from 1988 to 2021. During his diplomatic career, he has worked in the Ministry of External Affairs, in the Office of External Affairs Minister and in the Prime Minister’s Office. He served as India’s Ambassador to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, to the Kingdom of Spain and to the Russian Federation, until October 2021.


Dr. Adil Rasheed

Topic: "Radicalisation and Counter-Radicalisation Strategies" 

Dr. Adil Rasheed joined MP-IDSA as Research Fellow in August 2016. Before that, he was researcher and political commentator in various international think tanks and media organizations for over 17 years, both in the United Arab Emirates and India. He was Senior Research Fellow at the United Services Institution of India (USI) for two years from 2014 to 2016, where he still holds the honorary title of Distinguished Fellow. He was Researcher at the UAE’s premier think tank The Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) for eight years (2006-14). Dr. Rasheed is the author of the book ISIS: Race to Armageddon (2015), which explored the so-called Islamic State’s origins, ideology, vision,mission, organization, administration, military strengths and weaknesses, warfare, global outreach, recruitment and the international response to the challenge it poses.

Amb. Anil Wadhwa

Topic: "India’s international trade and negotiations history"

Ambassador Anil Wadhwa has been a member of the Indian foreign service from July 1979 till may 2017. In this 37 year career with the Indian foreign service he has been ambassador of India to Italy & San Marino, Thailand, Oman and Poland & Lithuania and has served in Hongkong, Beijing ( twice) , permanent mission of India in Geneva and worked on deputation with the organisation for the prohibition of chemical weapons in The Hague where he headed their media and public affairs and government relations branches. Ambassador Wadhwa was head of the East Europe division in the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi and looked after relations with Russia and Eastern European countries


Dr. Manish Dhabade

Topic: "India’s Soft Power Diplomacy"

Manish S. Dabhade is an Assistant Professor of Diplomacy and Disarmament in the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and Convener of the Indian Diplomacy Research Group. His teaching and research interests include diplomacy history, theory and practice, with a special reference to India.
